Messy Love 02:52
Some believe in fairy tale love. Others don't believe in love at all, but I believe in messy love that lives inside the fall. Adam and Eve set in place the course of love for the human race and we all eat of forbidden fruit blame each other, it's nothing new CHORUS For in this messy thing we call love, we fight and struggle and sometimes fall. Get back up and we do it all, we do it all again. Sure it's complicated, a total mess, full of heartbreak and all the rest, but it's the all the rest, that gives me pause, let's me know I'm truly blessed. I can't predict blues skies or grey, but this I know, we'll rise each day and with clumsy hearts and feet of clay, we'll stumble through and find our way...ay...ay CHORUS

Midnight 03:06
It was well past midnight, I was standing in New Jersey thirsty and looking for a phone. I could not read the signs, trying to make up my mind just who to call. so quiet in the city you can hear the traffic lights all changing there ain't nothing goin' on. and when I get this loose and feel like talking, all my friends are gone. Chorus- Ain't gonna make it, Ain't gonna make it home. ain't gonna make it, all alone. Every bricks a jungle, and there's no one standing with me, a sudden quiet chokes off the heart of the city Laughter falls from windows, with a thousand sounding TV's where strobing illusions seem to enter in so easy. I feel safe from the fallout.........close to every building I'm hiding from the sirens......as I duck into the doorway- and I Chorus- Ain't gonna make it, Ain't gonna make it home Ain't gonna make it, all Alone. Break- No money for a taxi, too little for a hotel, i've just enough case to think about a coffee and there's no one here to share it, where my breath is falling vagrant, well I collect my thoughts and prepare this statement. Chorus- Ain't gonna make it, ain't gonna make it home Ain't gonna make it, with these dried up bones. It was well past midnight, I was standing in New Jersey Thirsty and looking for a phone.

This ol’ town closes down at night. Except for a coupla’ neon lights. A caravan and endless band of cars and trucks Wind their way, like a fourleaf clover To bring them luck. Chorus Like pioneers from days erased, We circle the wagons To protect this place. To hold back time And the world at bay Knowing nothing lasts All fades away. So until that day when time slips away our dreams Will be in cars. In backseats, lovers meet, we make love Underneath the stars. Innocence lost, we know the cost, but we Plunge headlong. Cuz we are young and we’re strong, and we know The end of this song. Chorus
4.
I'm on the outskirts of lonesome going someplace from nowhere. Life always looked better from inside my dreams. Cuz I'm heading south of lonesome to a better place indeed. Where it's warm and sunny and the bluebird always sings. Chorus- The ghosts of the past will be forgotten as tomorrow will soon be today. And it's always best, at least I've heard it said, to just let sleeping dogs lay. And I will wake up to the sound of my own heart's beat and let it be my guide for these poor tired feet. I've got miles to go to get there, many miles I've left behind, as I cross this big ol' country I leave that lonesome place behind. Chorus
5.
I’m stranded in a depot Outside Knoxville Tennessee Snow is dropping so hard I can’t even see. Song on the radio reminds me of you CHORUS And it’s two more tunes ‘till daylight And I’m a thousand miles from home. Should’a never left you Should’a never gone. There’s nothing I can do ‘cept sing this tired ol’ song Maybe I’ll be too late Or maybe too far gone CHORUS I think about your laughter I can still see your smile Think of all the good things, girl, We had for awhile But I was born to wander And I was born to roam CHORUS BREAK CHORUS Maybe this ol’ storm Will soon be letting up. I’ll grab my gear And board this greyhound bus. But for now I’m stranded And I’m feeling so alone. CHORUS

A man wakes up in the AM And feels an awful chill. He sits down at the kitchen table With a pile of unpaid bills. Next to him his wife she stands 30 years by her man, Cup of coffee in her hand, She says it all works out in the end. Chorus- So take care of what your’re given Remember we’re all forgiven, Heed the words of ol’ Bob Dylan Stop the dyin’, start the livin’. You man feel you’re all alone, Feel it echo through your bones. Rest assured this life’s on loan, We’re all walkin’ each other home. There’s a man out in the street, Been three days since he eat. He keeps paddin’ the same ol’ beat, Find some shade for a cool retreat, When a boy comes up to him With a crooked sideways grin, Says, “hey mister, you could use a friend.” Then he takes him by the hand. CHORUS For every woman, man and child We’re on this earth for a little while. Though we may walk a billion miles In the end love will stand the trials. We must remember we’re not along When the plow strikes the stone And the seeds of love are sown Take a hand and walk on home. CHORUS
7.
CHORUS- G You’ll never know C how much I love you. G You’ll never know D D7 how much I care. G You’ll never know, C The depth of my soul, G D You’ll never know G How much I care Em G Words fall away when I’m near you Em Bm7 Get in the way of all that’s true Em All I can do, is Am Em Stumble into blue Bm7 Em Stumble into blue Chorus BRIDGE Em G You walked away and left me Em G You walked away with my heart C Em You walked away and left me Bm7 Em Left me here in the dark. Chorus Someday I know I’ll be alright Shed this darkness for the light. Now all I can do is Stumble into blue Stumble into blue. Chorus

You Angel 04:40
Sunlight pours through a tear in my bedroom shade warming my face, as I awake, to see you lying there. A finger of light reaches across your pillowcase, resting ever gently on your still sleeping face. Chorus- And you, angel you I long for your tender embrace. Your silent beauty, moves me in this quiet place. You stir slowly turning your face from the sun to me, seeking those cooler places, deep down in the sheets. Reaching your hand across to the place where I lay, coming to rest on my chest, as you drift away. Chorus- I look at your hand, with that worn wedding band and think of the dreams we had and all of our plans. Now time is passing by and we are growing old. may our love endure, like so much precious gold. Chorus-

LOOKS THAT CAN KILL I knew this kid who lived up the block. The boy played guitar, he sure could rock. He used to turn it up and play real loud. Sometimes he'd even draw a crowd. They called him Tommy, Tommy two tone Cuz he always had those brown and white saddle shoes on. The kid was cool, like cold blue steel The kid had looks, looks that could kill. CHORUS- Ooh, ooh he had those looks that can kill Ooh, ooh he had those looks that can kill Now Tommy headed out for east LA He met Sally in a roadhouse along the way For Sally it was love at first sight Tommy only knew it felt right They moved into an upstairs apartment Sally worked the weekends just to pay the rent While Tommy stayed home and played his guitar Dreaming of the day he'd be a star. He started playing the clubs, He loved the bright lights While Sally stayed home pacing the floor all night She begged him not to leave her alone He shoved some money in her hand, said "here go buy a phone CHORUS Tommy landed a recording contract Soon he was hot on the stage and sharp as a tack The girls loved him, cuz he had the look. They loved his hair, his clothes and the way he shook. Sally started mixing gin and cocaine. To drown her sorrow and numb her pain One morning Tommy found a note on the door It said, "don't bother to knock, there's nobody home The ambulance arrived in a flash The floor was bloody, her wrists were slashed. They wrapped her up and carried her away The paper said DOA CHORUS Now Tommy stopped playing. He could not write. He said, he'd lost his inspiration, his guiding light He locked the door turned out the lights and closed the drapes Fell in the floor and he began to pray Next morning, Tommy stumbled from his bed Went in the bathroom holding his head He looked in the mirror and his heart did race He grabbed a razor from the sink, began to slash his face. The blood ran and the lights grew dim He felt his life flow out, felt the love of God within My God, My God, he screamed Then he awoke from this awful dream BREAK He went down the street to the local bar Ordered beer for his thirst and whiskey for his scars His friends said, "Man you look half dead." He stared into their eyes and said, Ooh, He's got those looks that can kill Ooh, He's got those looks that can kill Ooh, He's got those looks that can kill

The Devil’s In the Cracks G C/ G C Bm You pick yourself up, G Dust off your pointed sorrow, Bm Which brought you to the cusp G Of all your tomorrows. Bm And sorrow swept away G In clouds of yesterday, Bm C Like forgotten words you pray CHORUS D If God is in the details, C Then the devil’s in the cracks. D Keep looking toward the horizon C….. G And don’t …don’t look back. Sometimes the future’s like a chalkboard We forgot to erase and you’re standing right in front and you can’t find your place. And you feel your suffocating And the world is closing in But you spy and open window And you can breathe again. CHORUS So at the end of the day Brush away your regrets. Don’t mind a little dust, Helps us hedge our bets. Travel lightly through this world, Try to avoid the cracks Pay attention to what matters And don’t look back. CHORUS

Highway Eyes 04:41
Highway Eyes I first met my Daddy’s uncle When I was just a child Dad said I had his Highway Eyes Mom said that he was wild. As a man, I went and found him Down along the Natchez Trace We lit a lamp and he told me About his younger days: CHORUS A young man, he wandered hard Up and down the road They couldn’t keep him in the yard When the south wind blowed The night that he turned twenty one He stood out on a beach Mississippi at his back The world just out of reach A sixteen-year-old broken heart Lie crying in her bed The south wind blew her curtains back And stole her handsome lad, CHORUS The night that he turned twenty five Way down in Vera Cruz He lay bleeding from a knife He swore he’d been seduced Her eyes were dark, her shoulders bare Her smile as sweet as sin He’d caught her scent as it was carried On that old south wind CHORUS The day he turned eighty five In a two-bit nursing home More tales he spun Of the places that he roamed And his voice became a whisper He still had those highway eyes Soon the spell was broken, as we heard a sound outside. CHORUS I opened up the window Threw wide the shutter doors But it was just that old south wind Had come for him once more In the graveyard where we gathered The preacher spoke a while Then the roses up and scattered And I just had to smile FINAL CHORUS As a swirl of dust flew up so hard, And danced on down the road No, they never could keep him in the yard When the south wind blowed

BY THE RIVERSIDE Growing up a river ran thru my backyard. Sometimes when life would get too hard. I’d go down to where the river glides, Watch the turtles and the dragonflies And life was good by the riverside. Sometimes at night when I could not sleep. I’d slip out my window to the river deep And watch out for the big ol’ snake Listen to the sound the bullfrog makes And life was sweet, by the river deep. Moving into those teenage years Driving fast cars and drinking beer Hanging out on the river bank All we needed was a radio and a full tank And life was great, by the river bank. (Bridge) You get a little older and move away Life was simpler than it is today Youth and innocence fade away But the memory of that river stays…. And stays Now the only thing running thru my backyard Is an alleyway and the occasional car. But when life gets hard I can close my eyes See the turtles and the dragonflies And life goes on, on and on, on and on ..pause.. by the riverside.

You Get Me 03:06
You Get Me When I’m up When I’m down When I’m falling to the ground. You get me, When I’m blue. Through every storm your love holds true. You get me sunshine, To chase the rain, You get me no matter how hard or long it takes. You get me silver, You get me gold, You get me shelter from the dark and cold. CHORUS- You get me, You get me, You get me through the night You get me, You get me, You make all my wrongs seem right. You get me curly, You get me straight, You get me into bed when I come home too late. You get me coffee You get me tea, You get me to turn off that damn tv. You get me laughter, You get me tears, You get me all I need through the years. You get me forgiveness, And grace to spare, Your my angel of mercy unaware. Chorus You get me coming And when I go, It’s your face that I see in the window. You get me hello and goodbye It’s your face I will see when I fly.

about

The making of this album almost didn't come about. I had some new songs and some old ones and three years ago, I mentioned to my son, Jesse that I wanted him to produce my next record. He agreed.
I continued to write, but somewhere in that time, I had a trauma that caused me to lose my singing voice. After nothing appeared to be helping and what little progress I made was slow, I became pretty resigned that recording was over. Nevertheless, I continued to write songs.
Then about two years ago, my son, Jesse, walked into the house and said, "dad get yourself ready, because we are going into the studio next month to do your record." Now, I was speechless, as well as unable to sing. I objected and reminded him of my voice. He was undeterred and in fact told me he had already paid for the time, as his father's day gift to me. Plus, he pointed out that my voice was already better and getting stronger, and that this was a scratch vocal, and we could wait longer come back and do the actual keeper vocal. He also suggested that I tune my guitar down a step and he was sure that would help, and in fact, he said, "I like your voice in that lower range."
Well there is not much you can say to that, except "thank you," and then I got to work. It gave me the kick I needed to be hopeful again and I began to play and sing daily and I even wrote a few songs during that time leading up to this recording.
Needless to say, my voice did come back, not better, not worse, just different, and I have learned to appreciate it all the more.
Truly, recording this record was one of the best experiences of my life and one of the easiest, due to the talent with me and the support they showed to me.
For the most part these are songs of hope and of moving forward, even though a characters like in the Title cut Two More Tunes 'Til Daylight" is stranded and miles from home, he is waiting out the storm and hoping for the best when he arrives.
Sometimes hoping for the best is all we can do and I believe that's enough.

about

Scott Aycock Tulsa, Oklahoma

I am a singer/songwriter living in Tulsa Oklahoma.
This is my third CD release and the first one produced by my son, Jesse Aycock and featuring both of my sons playing on the record, so it was especially gratifying.
The writing of these songs and recording this record lifted me out of a dark place and made me so grateful to family and the healing power of music.
These songs celebrate hope.
