I grew up on the St.Francis River in the Arkansas Delta. It ran through my backyard. Rivers have always been an integral part of my life due to my childhood on that river. I really do carry it with me, and whenever I am near a river, no matter how far from home, it feels like a stitch connecting me to home. All is right when I am on the river.

BY THE RIVERSIDE

Growing up a river ran thru my backyard.
Sometimes when life would get too hard.
I’d go down to where the river glides,
Watch the turtles and the dragonflies
And life was good by the riverside.

Sometimes at night when I could not sleep.
I’d slip out my window to the river deep
And watch out for the big ol’ snake
Listen to the sound the bullfrog makes
And life was sweet, by the river deep.

Moving into those teenage years
Driving fast cars and drinking beer
Hanging out on the river bank
All we needed was a radio and a full tank
And life was great, by the river bank.

You get a little older and move away
Life was simpler than it is today
Youth and innocence fade away
But the memory of that river stays…. And stays

Now the only thing running thru my backyard
Is an alleyway and the occasional car.
But when life gets hard I can close my eyes
See the turtles and the dragonflies
