about

Co-wrote this with my friend Richard Higgs. He came to me with some verses he'd written based on a photo of a plainswoman out in her garden during the depression/dust-bowl era. I came up with some more verses and a chorus. Also, I wrote the melody.

lyrics

Hollyhocks and Morning Glories

Bm
She’s been honed by the wind
D
See the bones in her skin
A
Shining through
Bm
Shining Through.
Bm
See the way that she stands
D
With her hoe in her hands
A
And her hair streaming out
Bm
behind her

CHORUS
G
Hollyhocks and morning glorys
A
This is her last sanctuary.
G
Husband talks in worn-out stories
A
Broke down trucks and money worries
D C G
This wind talks to her of nothing
G Bm
Nothing at all.

Bm
When you walk down her road
D
Keep your hat on your head
A
Try the neighbors,
A Bm
Try the Neighbors.
Bm
Times are tough everywhere
D
She’s got nothing to spare
A
For a friend, or any
A Bm
passing stranger

CHORUS

Bm
In the pocket of her dress are
D
Promises as hard as stones
A
Scatter them,
A Bm
she will scatter them.

Bm
but first Let her have
D
a moment’s rest
A
This wind makes no promises
A Bm
She can hold to her breast.

Chorus

G
Hollyhocks and morning glorys
A
This is where her fears are buried.
G
Husband talks in worn-out stories
A
Broke down trucks and money worries
D C G
This wind talks to her of nothing
G Bm
And She knows it never will

Chorus

about

Scott Aycock Tulsa, Oklahoma

I am a singer/songwriter living in Tulsa Oklahoma.
This is my third CD release and the first one produced by my son, Jesse Aycock and featuring both of my sons playing on the record, so it was especially gratifying.
The writing of these songs and recording this record lifted me out of a dark place and made me so grateful to family and the healing power of music.
These songs celebrate hope.
