about

My good friend Richard Higgs and I wrote this song. Knowing I can't resist a good story song he brought me these lyrics,. I edited it a little and came up with a melody.
I am really happy with this song and what the guys did with it. Dylan and Jason really kept the bones of the song understated and Jesse's lap steel and simple quiet piano perfectly complimented this song and let the story stand on it's own.

lyrics

Highway Eyes

I first met my Daddy’s uncle
When I was just a child
Dad said I had his Highway Eyes
Mom said that he was wild.

As a man, I went and found him
Down along the Natchez Trace
We lit a lamp and he told me
About his younger days:

CHORUS
A young man, he wandered hard
Up and down the road
They couldn’t keep him in the yard
When the south wind blowed

The night that he turned twenty one
He stood out on a beach
Mississippi at his back
The world just out of reach

A sixteen-year-old broken heart
Lie crying in her bed
The south wind blew her curtains back
And stole her handsome lad,

CHORUS

The night that he turned twenty five
Way down in Vera Cruz
He lay bleeding from a knife
He swore he’d been seduced

Her eyes were dark, her shoulders bare
Her smile as sweet as sin
He’d caught her scent as it was carried
On that old south wind

CHORUS

The day he turned eighty five
In a two-bit nursing home
More tales he spun
Of the places that he roamed

And his voice became a whisper
He still had those highway eyes
Soon the spell was broken,
as we heard a sound outside.

CHORUS

I opened up the window
Threw wide the shutter doors
But it was just that old south wind
Had come for him once more

In the graveyard where we gathered
The preacher spoke a while
Then the roses up and scattered
And I just had to smile

FINAL CHORUS
As a swirl of dust flew up so hard,
And danced on down the road
No, they never could keep him in the yard
When the south wind blowed

about

Scott Aycock Tulsa, Oklahoma

I am a singer/songwriter living in Tulsa Oklahoma.
This is my third CD release and the first one produced by my son, Jesse Aycock and featuring both of my sons playing on the record, so it was especially gratifying.
The writing of these songs and recording this record lifted me out of a dark place and made me so grateful to family and the healing power of music.
These songs celebrate hope.
