about
Well, this song has been around since the 70's and I finally got around to recording it. It's a strange song, and I didn't trust just anyone to produce it. Fortunately, both my sons really got it, and were able to flesh it out, and bring everyone else on board. John played toy piano on this one. Big thanks to my younger brother, Joe Aycock, who did the recitation underneath everything.
Let me just say, when I wrote this song, I was reading a lot of Flannery O'Connor stories, and was captivated by how she introduces us to quirky characters, and then uses violence to usher in grace or redemption. That is what I was trying to do with this song. Thus, I am playing with the phrase, "Looks that can kill."
lyrics
LOOKS THAT CAN KILL
I knew this kid who lived up the block.
The boy played guitar, he sure could rock.
He used to turn it up and play real loud.
Sometimes he'd even draw a crowd.
They called him Tommy, Tommy two tone
Cuz he always had those brown and white saddle shoes on.
The kid was cool, like cold blue steel
The kid had looks, looks that could kill.
CHORUS-
Ooh, ooh he had those looks that can kill
Ooh, ooh he had those looks that can kill
Now Tommy headed out for east LA
He met Sally in a roadhouse along the way
For Sally it was love at first sight
Tommy only knew it felt right
They moved into an upstairs apartment
Sally worked the weekends just to pay the rent
While Tommy stayed home and played his guitar
Dreaming of the day he'd be a star.
He started playing the clubs, He loved the bright lights
While Sally stayed home pacing the floor all night
She begged him not to leave her alone
He shoved some money in her hand, said "here go buy a phone
CHORUS
Tommy landed a recording contract
Soon he was hot on the stage and sharp as a tack
The girls loved him, cuz he had the look.
They loved his hair, his clothes and the way he shook.
Sally started mixing gin and cocaine.
To drown her sorrow and numb her pain
One morning Tommy found a note on the door
It said, "don't bother to knock, there's nobody home
The ambulance arrived in a flash
The floor was bloody, her wrists were slashed.
They wrapped her up and carried her away
The paper said DOA
CHORUS
Now Tommy stopped playing. He could not write.
He said, he'd lost his inspiration, his guiding light
He locked the door turned out the lights and closed the drapes
Fell in the floor and he began to pray
Next morning, Tommy stumbled from his bed
Went in the bathroom holding his head
He looked in the mirror and his heart did race
He grabbed a razor from the sink, began to slash his face.
The blood ran and the lights grew dim
He felt his life flow out, felt the love of God within
My God, My God, he screamed
Then he awoke from this awful dream
BREAK
He went down the street to the local bar
Ordered beer for his thirst and whiskey for his scars
His friends said, "Man you look half dead."
He stared into their eyes and said,
Ooh, He's got those looks that can kill
Ooh, He's got those looks that can kill
Ooh, He's got those looks that can kill

I am a singer/songwriter living in Tulsa Oklahoma.
This is my third CD release and the first one produced by my
son, Jesse Aycock and featuring both of my sons playing on the record, so it was especially gratifying.
The writing of these songs and recording this record lifted me out of a dark place and made me so grateful to family and the healing power of music.
These songs celebrate hope....more
Poetic lyrics about things that matter, and inventive musicianship in the service of the song, and lastly melodies that are brave and unexpected. Scott Aycock
Beautifully understated finger/style acoustic and electric guitar. Melodies that surprise and delight, reminding us to take a moment and enjoy the simple things this world has to offer. Scott Aycock

A perfect tribute to one of the most underrated music hubs in America by some of the most under-recognized, talented musicians playing today. kristin ides
